About

The world is more interesting when you map it.

SpatialStat is an independent publication that explains our changing planet through maps, satellite images and open data.

Why SpatialStat

Satellites now photograph every place on Earth every few days, and more environmental data is open than ever before. Most of it never reaches the people it concerns: it stays in archives, papers and specialist tools.

SpatialStat turns that data into maps you can read in a few seconds and stories you can trust. We start from a question, follow the data, and show how we got the answer.

How we work

Four principles behind every map

Every map has a source

Each map names its data, projection and tools, with a link to the original dataset.

Uncertainty is shown

Clouds, gaps, estimates and projections are marked on the map, not smoothed away.

Plain language

Written for curious readers anywhere in the world. Terms are explained the first time they appear.

Open data first

We work with public datasets wherever possible, so anyone can check and build on the work.
